The national unemployment rate rose to 8.5 percent in March, or 13.2 million unemployed. Since the beginning of the recession, a reported 5.1 million jobs have been lost, the majority of which have occurred in the last 5 months. One ray of hope—the job market in the Washington Area is in better shape than most. The latest data from the Bureau for Labor Statistics concludes that the Washington Area has maintained one of the lowest unemployment rates.
