The Performance Institute Forms Partnership with Telework Exchange

Jon Desenberg, Senior Policy Director of PI, Lobbies for Passage of Telework Bill

Washington, DC (August 3, 2010) – Just a few short weeks after the passage of HR 1722, the Telework Improvement Act of 2010, The Performance Institute (PI) and Telework Exchange have entered a partnership to promote Federal telework initiatives.

According to PI’s Senior Policy Director Jon Desenberg, the bill would combat budgetary, environmental, productivity and even security problems in the Federal government’s current system. If the bill wins Senate approval, the measure will generate significant savings to Federal agencies, according to research by both organizations.

Telework Exchange is a public-private partnership that promotes telework for the government workforce. The Telework Exchange Fall Town Hall Meeting on October 7 will gather federal workers, private contractors and telework advocates to improve execution and implementation strategies. John Berry, Director of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM), will be one of the prominent speakers. Mr. Desenberg will lead a panel discussion on building the business case for teleworking.

Administration officials have identified employee travel as the largest contributor of greenhouse gases for Federal agencies. Research compiled by Telework Exchange has shown that a comprehensive telework framework would significantly reduce that footprint while decreasing utility and building operations costs of agencies. Currently, the Federal government is the nation’s largest energy consumer.

Several agency chiefs have publically supported these efforts. State Department officials have noted improved teleworking programs may allow the government to continue functioning during a national security event or natural disaster.

Telework Exchange leadership and Mr. Desenberg are confident the partnership will lead to improved awareness, acceptance and advocacy for telework policies. With recent Administration memos to cut emissions and improve performance measures, both organizations see the chances of legislation passing as a high probability.
