WASHINGTON , DC - The Performance Institute is proud to present the 2005 Performance Management Excellence Award to the Department of Transportation. The Performance Management Excellence Award recognizes management practices in the federal government that have led to increased transparency, accountability, and program performance.

Over the past year, the Department of Transportation has shown significant improvement in implementing managerial reform throughout the Department. These efforts culminated in improved scores in 4 of the 5 categories on the President's Management Agenda scorecard. Within one quarter, the agency improved scores from yellow to green in the categories of Performance Management, Competitive Sourcing, E-Government, and Human Capital. The Department is building upon that success by driving performance management throughout its various bureaus. For example, the Department has fully linked its strategic plan with human capital strategies, institutionalizing annual workforce planning and analysis while integrating various competitive sourcing initiatives. This kind of continued initiative shows that the Department of Transportation is not just interested in reaching a green score, they are committed to staying green.

The 2005 Performance Management Excellence Award was presented to the Department of Transportation at the fifth annual Government Performance Summit in Washington , DC . This conference is convened by a coalition of good government organizations who are committed to strengthening sound managerial practices within Federal departments. The focus of the national conference was to bring together federal officials to share innovations that improve performance, accountability, transparency, and competition.

The event took place April 25 through April 27, 2005 at the Washington Convention Center . For more information please go to www.governmentperformance.org.
